Great image/models of Morocco’s lost boat house!

epcotexplorer:

Maritime Morocco: Morocco’s Lost Boat House

Although the Morocco pavilion is perhaps EPCOT’s best example of showcasing environment and culture in World Showcase, WED originally planned to add another layer of realism to the pavilion.

Early concept models reveal that a magnificent boat house would have served as the pavilion’s terminus by fully enclosing Morocco’s tangerine lined courtyard. The boat house would have also been functional, and served as a port for the Friendships that offer transportation around World Showcase Lagoon.

Further, this addition would have expanded the scope of World Showcase’s only Middle Eastern nation. With a nod to the rich and diverse maritime history of Morocco, the locals and subjects expressed in the pavilion could cover the storied history of Casablanca and the Straights of Gibraltar.

Given that Morocco is already a fantastic example of believable, realistic, and thoughtful design choice for simply exposing culture, it’s hard to believe that one small omission, such as this boat house, could even improve upon the final product.

Things You Might Not Know About Pirates of the Caribbean at Disneyland Park

by Erin Glover

Pirates

Pirates of the Caribbean recently celebrated its 45th anniversary here at Disneyland park, but thar be mysteries afloat in this historic attraction. Here be some things ye landlubbers might not know…

  • Pirates of the Caribbean was the last Disneyland attraction personally supervised by Walt Disney.
  • The attraction was originally envisioned as a New Orleans-themed Blue Bayou Mart featuring a Pirate Wax Museum, housed in a 70-foot deep basement. The basement now serves as the grotto section of the attraction.
  • The fire effects in the Burning Town scene were so realistic that prior to the attraction’s grand opening, the Anaheim Fire Chief asked that the effects automatically shut off in the event of a real fire.
  • It cost $15 million to build New Orleans Square ($8 million of which was spent on Pirates of the Caribbean). This is equal to the amount the United States paid for the real New Orleans as part of the Louisiana Purchase of 1803.
  • The façade of the attraction was partly inspired by the Cabildo building in Jackson Square in New Orleans, which served as the seat of the Spanish colonial government in 1799. It is also noted for being the site where the Louisiana Purchase was signed in 1803.

Hell Just Froze Over – CM Facial Hair Allowed!

Posted on January 23rd, 2012

Yesterday in a memo (below) from Walt Disney Parks and Resorts it was announced that male cast members will be allowed to grow beards and goatees.

“The Disney Look is an important part of the history and heritage of the Walt Disney Company. As the company continues to evolve, the Disney Look appearance guidelines must also be prepared to be re-evaluated with awareness to industry standards. Effective Friday, Feb. 3, facial hair, specifically beards and goatees are now an approved option for U.S. based Walt Disney Theme Parks and Resorts costumed and non-costumed male Cast Members, unless otherwise restricted by regulatory codes and standards. As with mustaches, all facial hair (beards, goatees, mustaches) must create an overall neat, polished and professional look and must be fully grown in, neatly groomed and well-maintained at no longer than a quarter of an inch in length. Also effective Friday, Feb. 3, non-costumed Cast Members in non-Guest facing locations can wear casual attire on Fridays for all U.S. based Theme Parks and Resorts. The “Casual Friday” dress parameters are outlined and additional resources are available on the Disney Look module of The Hub. Although we are a seven day a week operation, Friday is the only acceptable day for this option. For all male Cast Members, a fully grown in, well-maintained mustache, beard, or goatee is permitted, unless otherwise restricted by regulatory codes and standards. Facial hair must be neatly trimmed and may not present an unkempt appearance. Extreme styles are prohibited. All facial hair (beards, goatees and mustaches) must create an overall neat, polished and professional look. All facial hair must be fully grown in, neatly groomed and well maintained at no longer than a quarter of an inch in length. Mustaches may extend below the corners of the mouth to meet with the facial beard. Shaping the mustache or beard to a particular style is not permitted. Mustaches (without lower facial hair) must not extend onto or over the upper lip and must extend to the corners of the mouth, but not beyond or below the corners. Cast Members without a mustache, beard, or goatee are expected to be clean-shaven every day. For clarification on whether a mustache, beard or goatee is acceptable, please consult your area leader or contact the Cast Image and Appearance team.”

From The Disney Parks Blog:: The King Arthur Carousel

Although King Arthur Carrousel made its Disneyland Resort debut when the park opened in 1955, its history goes back much further. Just how old is the carrousel? Learn that and more below!

  • Walt Disney bought the 1875 Dentzel carrousel for $22,000 from Sunnyside Park in Toronto, Canada.
  • Since Walt Disney wanted only jumping horses for his carrousel – not the other animals which were part of the original – additional horses were added from another at Coney Island. Each horse on King Arthur Carrousel is a hand-carved antique.
  • About one in every five Disneyland park visitors takes a spin on King Arthur Carrousel.
  • The King Arthur Carrousel horses are touched up daily, and every year each horse undergoes a complete refurbishment. More than 30 colors are used on the horses – no two of which are painted alike. Learn more about how the horses are restored here.
  • There are a total of 72 leaping horses on King Arthur Carrousel. Walt Disney himself insisted that all horses would be leaping, so some of the original horses were reconfigured to the proper pose.
